VisageAir Explained · Issue Nº 03
How We Use AI.
Where the intelligence lives, where it does not, and who decides.
Editor's note: This is part of VisageAir Explained, a series describing who we are, what we make, and the principles that guide our work.
People ask us a direct question, so we will answer it directly: what does artificial intelligence do in VisageAir™, and what does it not do? Every company now says it is AI-powered. Almost none of them will tell you precisely where the AI is, where it is not, and what it is never allowed to decide. We will.
One framing shapes everything that follows: VisageAir produces general wellness information. It lines up your own photos and reads your own trend over time. It is built to give you context on your own journey, not to stand in for a doctor or anyone who cares for you. VisageAir provides general wellness and longevity information only. It is not a medical device, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
How we think about where the AI lives
The intelligence in VisageAir lives in one narrow place: a learned model that lines up your own frontal photos and reads how the soft tissue of your face changes over time. It looks at your face against your own earlier photos, you versus you, over a weight or wellness journey. That is the whole job. It does not read your expression, your mood, your age from your skin, or anything else it was not built to read.
The read is deterministic. Same photo, same result: run the identical image through it twice and you get the identical output, with the measurements visible to you. A deterministic model is the opposite of a black box, and most AI products cannot make that promise. This is not identity matching, not police tech, and not a disease score.
How we think about what we show you
What we show you is a trend, not a verdict. It is meant to give you calm context on how your own face is changing over time, in plain and general terms. We describe it at that level on purpose. We do not present it as a medical score, we do not attach a percentage to it, and we do not ask it to carry more meaning than a look at your own trend should. We wrote about why a trend and not a percentage, and we mean it.
How we think about software and judgment
VisageAir gives you information; it does not judge your health. It is not the decision-maker. We are deliberate about this boundary. You interpret, you decide, and if something concerns you, you talk to a professional; the software's job is to give you a consistent, honest look at your own trend. The honest position is that good software narrows the gap between information and judgment. It does not close that gap, and we do not pretend it does.
How we think about what the AI never does
- It never paints colors, labels, or heat onto a face. Results are words on a card.
- It never scores you or recommends a treatment. It is not medicine, and it does not tell you what to do about your body.
- It never reports a disease score, a probability, or an accuracy number we have not published with its source and its limits.
- It never guesses body measurements from a photo and presents them as fact.
How we think about accountability
Two rules govern everything above, and we hold them as rules rather than aspirations. First: a human is accountable for everything our AI touches. No output of ours reaches you without a named human owner of its consequences; there is no "the algorithm decided" in this company. Second: we say what the AI is for, in plain language, before you use it, not after, and not only in a policy document.
How we think about saying this now
The register a company uses about AI when it is small is the register it gets held to when it is large. The field is currently full of products that blur the line between wellness information and a medical verdict, on purpose, for marketing reasons. That blurring is precisely what our posture exists to prevent: wellness information stays wellness information, and any decision about your health stays with you and the people you trust. That is not a limitation we are apologizing for. It is the design.
A note on information →
If you want to understand how we handle information, our Privacy Policy and Terms are the governing documents. This installment states our operating principles in plain language; where those documents speak, they govern.
AI is how the read stays consistent. People are why it exists. We do not intend to confuse the two.
